X-Men #1 Preview (Unlettered)

X-Women by Claremont and Manara.
Fuck Yeah! or No Way!?
I’ve liked this, mostly because of the art, I know, I know, cheese cake bordering on porn, but it’s undeniable that Milo Manara’s dominion over the human figure is total. He draws sexy men and women like nobody else on this industry. And although there where some panels where the “action” got a little on the nose, I think that the real guilty on how women are portrayed in this book is Claremont, who turned up the chauvinist level a few marks and used any chance he got to allegedly play to Manara’s strengths… without realizing how much more the artists is. I’ve seen European albums by him much less exploitative and yet quite sexier.

Why I think Joe Kelly’s (and Steven Seagle’s) run on X-Men (1991) is the most underrated run by any author on that title is easily explained just by numbering some of his (or their) greatest moments:

  1. Cecilia Reyes stops whining about everything and starts being the BAMF we all know and appreciate
  2. The Marrow vs. Wolverine issue (#72) was beautifully done with nods to the old BWS Wolverine vs. Lady Deathstrike issue, and set the stage for the amazingness that is X-Men (1991) #74
  3. Storms reclaims her tiara (although this was a suggestion from artists Carlos Pacheco (#71)
  4. Psi-War was the kind of event that Marvel wish they could do now, a two-part story that put Psylocke on the map again and had ripples through all the MU. Obviously if Marvel did this story now it would be in the form of a seven parts mini-series with tons of tie-ins.
  5. Amazing artists almost every issue; Carlos Pacheco, German García, Adam Kubert, …
  6. Kitty, Peter and Kurt rejoin the X-Men

These to name just a few, which was yours? Tell me and I’ll make a post with it, deal?

emotionalhooligan:

Let’s call this a third installment part two because it deals with my second favorite X-man, Mystique. Again, I found myself attracted to the character not through the comic but the 90s cartoon, and like Rogue, I am loyal to the outfit she wore in the show. She’s a calculating and devious woman with a wavering allegiance, and yeah, she packs some serious heat. But she had this rarely shown soft side when it came to Rogue, and perhaps that’s why for me, they go hand-in-hand as my favorites. It’s only an added benefit that one’s a powerhouse and the other a gunslinger.

Note: I know I said in my last post “if I have nothing nice to say…” when it came to the movie’s portrayal of Rogue, but concerning Mystique, it can’t contain my seething hatred for that eye-sore of a prickly monstrosity. I’m sorry, but I hate it.

I’d have loved for the OP to add a uncannyxmen.net tag on this post, seeing as she/he basically took all the costume pictures from Mystique’s Sporlight article amd compilled them in the first picture of this photoset without giving any credit to the people at uncannyxmen.net, who work their asses off to create their wonderfull site. So I’m adding them.
